Where art meets engineering: create movement with automata!

Join us on a captivating journey into the world of automata, where art and engineering merge to bring inanimate objects to life. The Fabricating Automata workshop, inspired by our theatrical installation Mechanical Garden, invites participants to embark on a hands-on adventure of crafting their own automaton.

  • REGULAR WORKSHOP
    Duration: 3 hours
    Costs: €45,- per person

In this captivating workshop, Erin & Gosia from BetweenTwoHands will unveil the secrets behind automata creation. Participants will discover the art of making objects come to life using basic materials such as skewers, straws and cardboard.
Imagine, for example, a figure that spins or moves up and down.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will have made an automaton with an object that can move.

Note: we also offer an extended workshop, the

Craft a paper world: cut out, fold in, pop up!

Step into the enchanting realm of paper engineering and make a book with flat sheets of paper that unfold into three-dimensional objects.
The Making Paper Pop-Ups workshop is inspired by our theatrical installation Paperwork — a tribute to the life and legacy of Franz Kafka, entirely crafted from paper. Watch as paper transcends its two-dimensional confines and transforms into a captivating sculptural world.

  • STOP-MOTION ANIMATION

    Workshop by BetweenTwoHands

1 of 3

The choice is yours! Clay, paper, flowers, or macaroni? Transform just about anything into a captivating animation!

Bring objects in motion during this workshop inspired by our interactive stop-motion animation installation Ecognosis. Completely handmade, this work contains stop-motion animations featuring plants, insects and microbes that are drawn, painted or made of clay and paper.

  • We offer various formats of the Stop-motion Animation workshop suitable for children, adolescents and adults.

  • REGULAR WORKSHOP

    Duration: 3 hours
    Costs: €45,- per person

Discover the fundamentals of stop-motion animation, acquire a technical understanding of frame rates for smooth video and learn how to choose and animate materials. Participants are encouraged to bring their own materials, from paper and drawing tools to dried flowers, branches, coffee beans, macaroni, or anything they desire to animate. The possibilities are endless! Depending on the age group and level of experience, we will adjust the complexity of the workshop.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will have crafted a unique stop-motion animation. These individual animations will be edited into one collective final output, ensuring that everyone leaves with a compilation of all the videos created.

    Options

Choose the method that suits you best. We can provide the equipment, including a camera, tripod, and a laptop with Dragonframe software for participants to create animations. Alternatively, participants can download the Stop Motion Studio app on their mobile phones for a mobile-based experience.

  • EXTENDED WORKSHOP
    (Customisable)

The workshop can be extended to a full day or even an entire week to explore advanced animation techniques and experiment with diverse materials such as aluminium wire, clay, paper mache and more. This extended format allows for greater creativity and complexity in the animations, making it an ideal choice for enthusiasts and aspiring animators.

The Stop-motion Animation workshop has previously taken place at the following institutions:
