EXPO / VIDEO AND OBJECT INSTALLATION

At Factor IJ we show Mechanical Garden in the exhibition space. Through video and objects you are taken into the world of automata. You discover the mechanics behind the images and you investigate what it means to live in an automated society in which humanity seems increasingly entangled in self-designed systems and machines. You can walk in from Wednesday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM and on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

MECHANICAL GARDEN IN MOTION

Mechanical Garden is meticulously crafted with love for technology and craft. During the intuitive making process, Erin and Gosia confront the resistance of the material, such as ceramic, paper and wood. With their hands they bring objects to life that interact with the audience. They poetically make room for reflection on recognizable human experiences and social themes, such as loneliness, climate change and technological developments. After all, with imagination and faith there is always a way out. Experience Mechanical Garden in motion. Erin and Gosia show automata in motion in Factor IJ on Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM.

WORKSHOP / MAKING AUTOMATA

During 2 workshops in Factor IJ, Erin & Gosia reveal the secrets behind making automata. Take a journey through the fascinating world of automata, where art and technology merge to bring objects to life.

The workshop, inspired by the theatrical installation Mechanical Garden, invites you on a practical adventure in which you make your own automaton. You will discover how objects come to life with simple materials such as sticks, straws and cardboard. At the end of the workshop you will have made your own automaton with an object that can move.

To what extent does automation contribute to a healthy society?

Mechanical Garden is an object theatre performance based on automata that are activated by the performers.
Automata were originally self-operating machines, usually without a functional use, and experienced their heyday between 1848 and 1914. In the past, they were exhibited, among other places, at funfairs in order to amaze people. While, on the one hand, they were lovingly built by craftsmen at the beginning of the 20th century, the industrial revolution, on the other hand, meant that artisanal production had to make way for the assembly line. It is precisely that work process that has alienated us from the things that we produce and from the natural resources that we are now depleting.

It has now become clear that automation is driven by a desire for efficiency, but because machines are taking over more and more jobs and tasks, a sense of alienation has arisen in society; machines are so complicated that it is completely unclear how everything works. Lightning-fast technological developments are making our society increasingly effective, but are also robbing us of a lot of sensory pleasure and social contact. The technology that, on the one hand, provides quick and easy connection, fosters feelings of alienation and isolation on the other hand.
Mechanical Garden seeks connection with the audience by making the mechanics behind the performance visible.

Mechanical Garden is an investigation into what it means to live in an automated society where humankind seems to be increasingly enslaved by its self-designed systems and machines.

Enter our universe and marvel at a hand of branches that has been brought to life, a meditating robot, nodding heads, a walking bench and more beautiful automata made using traditional methods.
